Staff Changes and end of the Spring Season

Fellow members of the 71st PVI,

Thanks for all of your support in the Spring 2010 season this year. We rounded it out with Jean, NV and Costa Mesa, CA. It has been interesting, and also eventful. Our next planned event in 2010 is as part of the ACWS Battalion going to Huntington Beach this year over Labor Day weekend in early September.

Recently we have had Colonel Gary Iverson and his staff retire from command of the ACWS Federal Brigade. Last week their replacement was approved and appointed to the new role. I wanted to welcome Lieutenant Colonel Ken Dacey as the new ACWS Federal Brigade Commander.

Our 1st Sgt, Michael DeGregorio, has also stepped forward to serve as the Infantry Sgt. Major. We welcome him to his new role, and will be releasing orders for replacement NCO's as we move forward. We have appointed our 2nd Cpl. Elliot Codding to serve as our Acting 1st Sgt. in the meantime.

Yours in service,

Jason Coffey

Company B Commander

Prado Dam 2010

Fellow members of the 71st PVI,

As we did with Huntington Beach last year, the 71st PVI will be attending Prado Dam as part of the ACWS Union Infantry Battalion. The event remains scheduled for the second weekend in April - 10th and 11th, and we will attend as originally planned. In the event they call for their rainday we will be unable to attend due to commitments with Costa Mesa. For Prado Dam our interm commander for The ACWS Federals will remain Gary Iverson, as we wait on the ACWS Board to appoint the new Federal Commander.

As you are all aware this is not an ACWS Event, so instead of being free it will cost each of us an additional $2.00 to participate. At Huntington Beach the cost was $5.00, so pelase keep that in mind for September. I have attached the various forms to this message.

There are many ACW Reenacting units and associations in Southern California. Each one suits the needs and styles of various individuals in the hobby. We have all choosen to be part of the 71st PVI (aka 1st CA Inf.), and our unit primarily works with the ACWS, Inc. Really there is not much more to say than that. So whatever any other groups may, or may not, do regarding attendance at Prado Dam 2010 has no bearing on our attendance. Just as their attendence does not effect our normal participation at ACWS events.

Thanks to everyone for your great support of Blythe 2010, even with the rain. Thanks to those going to Picacho Pass this comming weekend to support the Historic site before it is closed in July. I will see all of you at Prado Dam and we will discuss who is available for the encampment at Jean (1st weekend) and the reenactment at Costa Mesa (3rd weekend) while we are all together on site.

Yours in service,

Jason Coffey

March 2010 Unit Staffing Changes

Fellow members of the 71st PVI,

I have recently updated our website to reflect the changes in the ACWS and 71st PVI Staffs.

We will miss our previous ACWS Union Command Staff as they have taken care of us over the years. It is a difficult job in between events where you have to organize units to attend events, and help with event planning. I do not envy all of the hard work they have put in, but can certainly understand the toll it takes and the tough decision they made as a result. We wish them the best in their future endevours with the 2nd IVRC, the 7th WIS, and appreciate their help in the interm while the ACWS selects a new Union Commander.

In addition to the changes above us, we have also had one significant internal change. Our 2nd Sgt. has stepped down to join the 2nd IVRC in their new endevour - this also means we lose our Scout. I wanted to wish Terry and Sandy the best, and thank them for all the support they have given our unit since nearly its inception. Like Gary, Dave, and Faye they will be missed amongst our ranks. We will be glad to still enjoy their fellowship at events where the 2nd IVRC is present. The bad news is that Terry was our new Sharpshooter for 2009! So that means the green kepi unfortunately passes back on a technicality to Mike as he was runner up.

As our Unit varies in size from 15 to 30 rifles depending on the event, it is important that we retain our Staff at a solid level so that we can maintain a high level of safety, and quality of drill. As this is a hobby it is hard to have fun if someone gets hurt. At, or prior to, Prado Dam we will announce the name of the individual our Command Group has selected to become our 3rd CPL. Later this Fall we will promote one of them to fill the big shoes that Terry left behind as our 2nd Sgt.

Yours in service,
